Protest outside Adelaide Oval during India-Australia test match
The farmers’ protests against the agricultural reforms continue to get support from different quarters. Indian-Australians came out to show solidarity with farmers outside the Adelaide Oval on Day 1 of the India-Australia day and night test match.
Several local residents, hailing mainly from Punjab, protested holding placards. They also raised slogans against the Indian government policies and termed them anti farmers. They said the protest outside the Oval was to create awareness about the “atrocities on the framers” in the wake of the agricultural laws enacted by the Indian government “giving powers to the corporates”.
One of the protesters, Gurinderjit Singh Jassar, part of the protest at Adelaide Oval said “We will continue to protest and show solidarity for our brothers in India. The farmers do not want these laws. The entire purpose behind these laws is to favor the big corporates like Adani and Ambani.”
Another protester Harjeet Singh said, “We all are into this together and the support from international level will help strengthen the hands of our farmers. The Indian government should not ignore the demands of the farmers.”
Showing their support, NRIs in Australia had earlier flooded Facebook walls and other social media with posts criticising the Indian government. The posts started pouring in after the pictures and videos of the protesting farmers being subjected to water cannons and tears shells started to show up during the onset of the protest in Punjab and Haryana.
Indians doing farming in Adelaide have also come out to protest during the past few weeks. Protests were also held outside the South Australia Parliament and other places in the city recently, and Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra before that.
