CHANDIGARH: The arrest of two health workers accused of raping an HIV patient has given strength to the victim. On Saturday, Sharmila (name changed) visited PGI to resume her treatment, which she had discontinued due to the exploitation. However, her resolve to fight back received a jolt on the very first day.
My condition has deteriorated. I went to PGI but could not get the OPD card made.
I have been asked to return on Monday, she said. The apathy followed her to the clinic where she had to undergo a medical examination. While I was coughing, the lady doctor covered her face and was reluctant to touch me, she added. However, after braving threats from the family of two accused -- James and Nekram -- Sharmila is prepared. People have been trying to discourage me but I will fight on, she said.
Meanwhile, Pooja Thakur, who has been encouraging Sharmila to carry on with the case, said, We did not expect the arrests. This has motivated us to carry on.
