Chandigarh: Ten days after news reports about alleged mass gang rapes in Murthal during the Jat quota stir had appeared, police have not yet received even a single input indicating that it actually happened. The solitary rape case registered following the complaint of a New Delhi resident is apparently heading towards cancellation due to contrary statements of the woman and her daughter.
In-charge of three-member SIT constituted by Haryana government DIG Rajshree Singh said that they had not received any complainant or evidence so far. "We have even approached a website portal operator, they have just provided the content of complaint not the source of complaint. We cannot start investigations without proper details of complainant or accused. Rest our inspector of women police station is investigating the case registered following the complaint of a Narela resident," said Rajshree Singh.
According to information, police are questioning the veracity of statements of the single complainant and her 17-year-old daughter which were registered by special magistrate of Sonipat soon after the registration of the case.
"Firstly, they are contradicting each other on the date of alleged rape. Secondly, there is difference in statements about dropping of survivor by accused. According to the woman, she was dropped at Singhu Border. While according to her daughter, accused had dropped them at Bahalgarh," a police official said.
"In addition, the complainant's mother had called her an extortionist who blackmailed men. This is too early to conclude. But we are sure that we would know all the details in next couple of days," police said.
The reports on the mass gang rapes on National Highway No.1 had appeared on February 25.
The Punjab and Haryana high court had taken suo motu cognizance of it and sough report from the state government. After initial inquiry did not reveal anything, the government had set up an SIT.
