NIT suicides: State women panel reviews ‘confidential inputs’ from students
Kurukshetra: The Haryana State Commission for Women has taken serious note of recent suicides at National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra, with chairperson Renu Bhatia confirming that the panel has received ‘confidential inputs' from students and initiated a review of the campus environment and safety conditions. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday in Kurukshetra, Bhatia said the commission held a detailed meeting with the NIT administration to assess the situation. "We have received certain inputs from students. Based on that, discussions were held with the administration, and the points brought to our notice were reviewed," she said. A team has also examined the campus atmosphere to evaluate whether it is safe for students. She added that details of affected students' families have been collected, and they will be contacted for further input. "A decision on the matter will be taken only after speaking to all concerned parties," Bhatia said, indicating that the commission is proceeding cautiously but thoroughly. Alongside the NIT issue, Bhatia chaired meetings of Local Complaints Committees (LCC) and Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) at the Kurukshetra district secretariat, reviewing grievances related to workplace harassment. She emphasised that mechanisms are in place in every office to address complaints, with escalation to district-level committees if needed. In Kurukshetra, she noted, only one complaint has been received by the district-level panel since its formation in 2020, and both parties in that case will be called for further inquiry. Highlighting the broader need for awareness, Bhatia urged women officers to act fearlessly and not suppress wrongdoing against junior staff. "Women officials must be empowered and speak up against any inappropriate actions, words or behaviour. This is the time to act," she said. "To strengthen awareness, the commission will organise a mega awareness camp in Kurukshetra on May 26. The initiative will bring together women employees from across departments. The camp aims to encourage women to assert their rights and report harassment at the workplace," she added. Ends MSID:: 130582671 413 |
