CHANDIGARH: Newly elected Congress municipal councillor Poonam Sharma will take oath to join MC on Tuesday. The oath ceremony will be held at deputy commissioner office of the Chandigarh during the evening hours.
Poonam Sharma won the by-election on municipal ward number 7 on last week by defeating Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Seema Yadav. With this victory now Congress has 12 seats in the 36 member house of MC.
The Congress has also emerged as a single largest party in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
Congress candidate Poonam Sharma had defeating their rival Bahujan Samaj Party candidate -BSP- Seema Yadav from 571 votes. The results came as a surprise for the Bhartiya Janta Party -BJP-, which had won the seat in December with the big margin of 1285 votes and now drastically came down and settled on third position.Out of total polled 10,742 votes, Congress candidate Poonam Sharma had received 4044 votes. BSP candidate Seema Yadav had got second position by getting 3,473 votes and BJP candidate Bindu Rana managed to get only 3089 votes. An independent candidate Sunita had received only 136 votes.In the month of December, 2011 the same seat was won by BJP councillor Laxmi Devi, who secured 3940 votes and Congress candidate had got 2655 votes. Later, after five months BJP councillor Laxmi Devi died in road accident and due to that by-election of the seat was held on 15 thof September.
