Himachal Pradesh: Infant among 3 family members killed in Mandi landslide, monsoon toll 417
KULLU: After a brief respite, heavy rain again wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Tuesday, triggering landslides and flash floods that killed at least three members of a family including an eightmonth-old infant and critically injured two in Sundernagar area.
Two people went missing after a flash flood struck Dharampur bus stand in Mandi early Tuesday. State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said HP’s monsoon death toll had risen to 417.
The Sundernagar landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, slammed into the house of Khub Ram (65) in Baragata village late Monday. The family was sleeping and had no chance of escaping the tonnes of debris that buried them. Roused by the noise, locals rushed out and began a rescue effort despite the rain and darkness.
They managed to pull out Khub Ram and his wife Darshanu Devi (58), but Tango Devi (64), Kamla Devi (33), and Kamla’s infant son Bhim couldn’t be saved.
The elderly couple were hospitalised in critical condition. On Sept 2, seven people were killed after a landslide hit Sundernagar’s BBMB colony.
Around 120km away, in Dharampur, a flash flood struck the bus stand Two persons were swept away along with their pickup. Dharampur DSP Sanjeev Sood said police rescued 150 children stranded in their hostel.
