Kurukshetra tops Haryana with 3,807 rooftop solar installations under PM Surya Ghar scheme

KURUKSHETRA: Kurukshetra district has secured the first position in Haryana by installing rooftop solar plants on 3,807 houses under the Prime Minister (PM) Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Out of a total 5,631 applications received in the district, solar plants have already been commissioned at 3,807 households. With a target of installing 4,677 solar plants by March 2026, the district has achieved 81.40% of its goal, emerging as the state leader.

Kurukshetra DC Vishram Kumar Meena chaired a meeting of the district-level committee at the Mini Secretariat on Friday to review the progress of the scheme. Earlier, Superintending Engineer of Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), Madan Gopal Jindal, presented a detailed progress report and briefed officials on various aspects of the scheme.


DC said the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana must reach every household. He lauded UHBVN officials for implementing the scheme in a planned manner and for creating public awareness across the district. Under the central government subsidy, beneficiaries receive Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW rooftop solar plant. In addition, the Haryana government is providing extra financial assistance to families with an annual income below Rs 1.80 lakh— Rs 25,000 for a 1 kW system and Rs 50,000 for a 2 kW system.

Explaining the benefits of the scheme, Meena said households can avail up to 300 units of free electricity per month, receive subsidies of up to Rs 1.10 lakh, and even earn by selling surplus power. The initiative also promotes environmental conservation and energy self-reliance. Applications can be submitted online at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

DC also announced that Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) will now be eligible for central and state financial assistance of Rs 18,000 per kW (up to 500 kW, including EV charging) for common facilities such as streetlights and drinking water pumps.

Meanwhile, Meena directed all departments to clear pending electricity dues amounting to nearly Rs 11.95 crore at the earliest. He also instructed power department officials to organise awareness camps in every major village of each block. So far, 303 awareness camps have been held between October and January to promote the scheme.
