‘Kali Bein to be clean before Guru Nanak birth anniv’

Jalandhar: Claiming that the historical Kali Bein rivulet will be declared pollution-free before the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, Rajya Sabha MP and environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal held a meeting with senior officials on Monday here and told them to plug the illegal outlets that carry waste into the Kala Sanghia drain and the Bein. He wants them to fix all the sources of pollution with the help of the civic bodies, PPCB, sewerage board, and drainage department. Seechewal ordered regular checking, sampling, and plugging of untreated sewage that runs off into the drain. Additional chief secretary for science and technology Rahul Tewari, Punjab Pollution Control Board chairman Adarsh Goyal, and member secretary G S Majithia attended the meeting.
Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak Dev is believed to have attained enlightenment after taking a dip in the once clear Holy Bein, now called Kali Bein or “black stream” due to the dark reflection of its pollutants. tnn
