Chandigarh: A 24-year-old junior resident was on Tuesday found dead next to some syringes inside a hospital’s trauma-centre bathroom in a suspected suicide that has devastated colleagues and sent police looking for his source of distress.
Dr Yogesh Banga, a first-year postgraduate student in internal medicine at the Govt Medical College in Sector 32, looked unconscious when colleagues concerned by his prolonged absence during shift found him. Staff forced entry into the locked cubicle when he didn’t respond to knocks. Emergency resuscitation failed.
A forensic team and Sector 34 police found some syringes near the body. Forensic investigators from the police say a definitive cause of death requires autopsy and toxicology verification.
Hospital sources said Dr Banga had shown signs of severe emotional distress in recent days. Investigators are interviewing his family, fellow doctors, and hospital administrators to determine whether his distress was linked to workplace pressures or personal matters.
Dr Banga had relocated to Chandigarh three months ago from Jalandhar to begin his residency and moved into a campus hostel. His family has reached the city after being notified of his death.
Colleagues described him as a dedicated and mild-mannered physician. For the local medical community, this unfortunate incident has exposed the heartbreaking emotional toll hidden behind a caregiver’s mask.
