AMBALA: Haryana’s energy, transport and labour Minister Anil Vij on Saturday asserted that independent journalism is indispensable for a healthy democracy, warning that if even one of the four pillars—legislature, executive, judiciary or the media—weakens, democracy itself will be destabilised. Addressing journalists at a programme organised by the Media Well Being Association at the Kingfisher Tourist Complex in Ambala, Vij described journalists as a vital bridge between the government and society.
He said journalists must function like CCTV cameras, keeping a sharp watch on every activity in society, conveying public concerns to the government and taking government achievements and welfare policies to the people. Emphasising the growing responsibility of the media in the digital age, Vij cautioned that fake news, paid news and clickbait journalism pose a serious threat to democratic values and the credibility of journalism.

During the event, the minister announced financial assistance of Rs 31 lakh from his discretionary fund for the welfare activities of the Media Well Being Association and journalists. He praised the association’s efforts, calling the media the mirror of society and a strong link between citizens and the government.
Vij recalled the historic role of journalism from the freedom struggle to the Emergency, noting that its core objective has always been nation-building while fulfilling social responsibility.
Highlighting the impact of the digital revolution, Vij said modern technology has empowered journalism by accelerating the flow of information. With smartphones and the internet, news now reaches not just neighbourhoods or cities but audiences across the country and abroad within seconds. However, he stressed that with this power comes greater responsibility to report accurately and ethically.
Vij also underlined the need for journalists to keep pace with new technologies and innovations through continuous training, similar to capacity-building programmes conducted in government departments. He said experienced professionals should guide journalists in adopting new tools and techniques to further strengthen the profession.
Strongly criticising recent incidents in Punjab, Vij termed any attack on press freedom a direct assault on democracy and called for nationwide condemnation. He said such actions should be opposed firmly to prevent future violations of media freedom.
Reiterating the Haryana government’s commitment to journalists’ welfare, Vij listed several initiatives, including a monthly pension of Rs 15,000; 4,000 km of free bus travel for accredited journalists, and assistance under accident insurance schemes. He also supported the idea of a dedicated budget head for journalists.
Responding to demands related to travel facilities in
Haryana Roadways buses, Vij assured that meetings with transport department officials would be held to consider the issues. On the occasion, he distributed accident insurance policy certificates and excellence awards to journalists.
The programme was attended by senior editors, association office-bearers and journalists from across the region, reflecting broad participation and support for press welfare and freedom.
