Amritsar: An improvised explosive device (IED) was found in an abandoned bag near a police post on the outskirts of Amritsar on Friday night.Suhail Qasim Mir, senior superintendent of police (Amritsar Rural), said police received information about a suspicious bag lying close to the police chowki in Rayya. A police team cordoned off the area and secured the perimeter. A bomb disposal squad was rushed to the scene and defused the explosive.

Security has since been tightened across the region, and CCTV footage from the vicinity is being examined. No terror group or criminal organisation has claimed responsibility so far. The SSP said an FIR was registered and investigations are underway. "We have identified the people behind the incident, including locals, who planted the IED. Their identities and motive will be made public soon," he added. Police urged residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity without delay and avoid spreading rumours.
