Haryana poultry farm owners fear losses

YAMUNANAGAR: Poultry farm owners are worried about the implications of the mysterious death of fowl in Barwala. They fear upcoming losses as the egg market is already feeling the pinch. After Haryana government issued an alert on Tuesday, teams of the animal husbandry and dairying department started collecting samples of poultry birds for examination.


A team collected samples in Yamunanagar district, which houses about 30 lakh hens and chickens. A survey has been started to detect the incidence of flu in the poultry industry, said officials of the animal husbandry department. As per information, about 1.70 lakh poultry birds died mysteriously in Barwala, Panchkula in the last few days. However, the cause of death is yet to be ascertained, as reports of samples are awaited from Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Jalandhar and High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal.

Rajeev Anand, a poultry farmer from of Yamunanagar said, “The rumour about bird flu is hitting the poultry business, which was already hit by the Covid-19 lockdown. We are following guidelines and advisories issued by doctors and adopting all precautions.”

Yamunanagar sub-division officer (SDO), animal husbandry, Dr Surender said an alert has been issued.
