CHANDIGARH: While are exploring several theories to determine what led senior officer Y Puran Kumar to take his own life on Tuesday, questions are also being raised about the FIR registered in Rohtak a day earlier that is being seen as the trigger for his suicide.
Puran Kumar's wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has specifically mentioned this "false FIR" in her complaint on Wednesday night.
The FIR, registered at Rohtak’s Urban Estate police station at 3.59pm on Oct 6 against head constable Sushil Kumar for alleged extortion, mentions the IPS officer’s name but not as an accused. He died by suicide less than 24 hours later.
The complainant’s identity is being protected by police.
A video that is going around on social media as that of the complainant shows a masked man claiming to be in the liquor contracting business.
The FIR says that the head constable who was posted at the IG office in Rohtak — where Kumar served as IGP before being transferred to Police Training College (PTC), Sunaria, on Sept 29 — was allegedly demanding money from the liquor contractor “on Kumar’s behalf”.
The complainant was granted police protection, purportedly due to threats he was getting from several criminals. He has alleged that several associates of ‘Himanshu Bhau’ gang have invested in liquor contracts, due to which he faces constant threat to his life.
On Tuesday evening, Rohtak SP Narender Bijarnia said: “The complainant provided audio-visual evidence, including CCTV footage, which led to Sushil’s arrest. He was taken into custody for two days and confessed to demanding on behalf of Y Puran Kumar. We were in the process of further investigation when we came to know about this incident (Kumar’s suicide).”
Questions are being raised on the timing of the FIR. It gives the time of occurrence of the offence as ‘July 9 to Oct 6’, and that information about the alleged offence was received on Oct 6 at 3.15pm. Sushil is the lone person named as accused. He is now in judicial custody.
On Wednesday night, SP Bijarnia told TOI: “Rohtak police neither named him (Kumar) as an accused nor summoned him for any investigation. The FIR registered by Rohtak police on extortion charges against a police officer is based on strong evidence and facts.”
