MOHALI: It was curtains on a career spanning more than three decades with the murder of Gurcharan Singh, chairman of Bhaddal Institute of Engineering Technology early on Saturday morning.
From endeavours in education to coal mining, Gurcharan had also tried his hand at reviving sick industries and initiating development works. A postgraduate from Delhi College of Engineering, he switched jobs looking for personal satisfaction, which he found in setting up his own engineering college, which he wanted to convert into a deemed university.
‘‘He neglected everything, including us, for his institute,’’ says his wife Kulwinder.
He worked over 12 hours daily in the college, she added. ‘‘The college students were his life and they in turn respected him, ‘’ says Kulwinder. His aim was not to prepare skilled robots but introduce persons with values into the mainstream, she added. Kulwinder said that she would carry his work forward with the help of the students. He is learnt to have spent lakhs of rupees on a road in the village. He had also given cattle to needy families.
