CHANDIGARH: Tainted Punjab woman police officer Raka Gira was sent to 14-day judicial remand by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court here on Wednesday.
CBI sleuths last week arrested Gira for taking bribe. The court sent her to two-day remand on Monday. However, CBI lawyers did not appeal for further remand for Gira.
“Raka Gira is an influential police officer and the investigation in this case is still in the initial stages.

If she is out, she could interfere with the probe in this case. Therefore, we have appealed to the court to send her to 14-day judicial custody,” CBI lawyer P K Dogra told TOI.
“CBI sleuths are yet to collect related documents and more evidence in this case. The investigation is still under process. Important witnesses are yet to be examined in this case,” he added.
However, the defence lawyer said CBI is on the backfoot in this case and they have no proof against Gira.
“CBI is on the backfoot. It does not have any evidence against Raka Gira. That is why it did not seek any further remand today. They have no basis for interrogating or questioning Raka,” Malkit Singh Jandiala, one of the defence lawyers, told TOI.
Gira was nabbed from her sprawling bungalow in Sector-15 here on Sunday afternoon, while she was accepting bribe of Rs 1 lakh. Her reader Manmohan Singh was also arrested by CBI officials on Monday. He is also currently under judicial custody.
