Five held for grenade attack at BJP’s Chd headquarters
Times News Network
Chandigarh: The UT police, in a joint operation with the counter intelligence wing of Punjab police, have solved the grenade attack case at the BJP headquarters in Sector 37 with the arrest of five accused and the recovery of explosives and ammunition.
The arrested men have been identified as Balwinder Lal alias Shami, Jasvir Singh alias Jassi and Charanjit Singh alias Channi, all residents of SBS Nagar in Punjab; Rubal Chauhan, a resident of Shimla; and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma, a resident of Sangrur in Punjab. Police said two key perpetrators, Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, are still absconding and teams are carrying out raids at multiple locations to apprehend them.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the module behind the attack was allegedly backed by Pakistan's ISI and operated under instructions from handlers located in Portugal and Germany. Police said the accused were part of a structured network comprising several operatives and sub-modules that worked in coordination to execute the attack.
According to investigators, the accused were involved in transporting a consignment of hand grenades, arms and live cartridges. The consignment was allegedly passed through multiple operatives before being handed over to Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, who reportedly lobbed a grenade at the BJP office on Wednesday. Police said delivery and execution of the attack were coordinated on the directions of a Portugal-based handler identified as Baljot Singh alias Jot.
During investigation, joint police teams recovered one live hand grenade and 15 live .30-bore cartridges. Further investigation is ongoing to identify the full extent of the network, trace the supply chain of explosives and weapons, and establish both backward and forward linkages.
Police said the attack took place on April 1, 2026, at around 4.50pm, when Aman Singh alias Bhola and Gurtej Singh, both residents of Rattangarh village in Morinda, Punjab, allegedly lobbed a grenade at the BJP office and fled the spot. After the incident, the two boarded a CTU bus and reached Kharar. No one was injured in the blast, though two vehicles were damaged due to the explosion.
Police also conducted raids at the residences of Aman and Gurtej in Rattangarh on Friday. Investigators said the grenade used in the attack was a Chinese-made P-86 grenade that had been smuggled into India through a drone from Pakistan.
