Chandigarh: Four municipal councillors from ruling BJP and one from Congress filed their nomination papers for the election of the Finance and CWontract Committee (F&CC) on Thursday — the last day to filing nominations. F&CC elections will not take place this time as only five members filed papers.
From BJP, Ravikant Sharma, Bharat Kumar, Mahesh Inder Sidhu and Shakti Prakash Devshali filed nomination papers.
Mayor candidate Sheela Phool Singh filed papers from the Congress. The nomination papers were filed before the additional municipal commissioner Saurabh Mishra.
Avoiding senior councillors, former mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, BJP fielded first timers. Sources revealed that the party largely comprised senior councilors. “Therefore, sensing cross voting and to avoid it, the party took the decision,” they added.
There were speculations that either BJP rebel and mayor candidate Satish Kainth or independent candidate Daleep Kumar would file the nomination papers, but none of them did.
The F&CC is the second biggest committee of the Chandigarh municipal corporation to take crucial financial and policy decisions after the general house.
The first meeting of the F&CC will be held after the formation of the committee on January 30.
The first general house of the MC will also discuss and approve the developmental agendas of various municipal wards.
