Drugs and weapon smuggling module busted in Asr, 2 held
Amritsar: Punjab Police on Thursday claimed to have busted a cross-border drug and illegal arms smuggling module with the arrest of two brothers from Amritsar and the recovery of 5.5 kg heroin, four pistols and 10 live cartridges. The operation, carried out by the counter intelligence, Amritsar, led to the arrest of Bobby Singh and Harjit Singh, both residents of Rokhe village in Ajnala, said director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. The preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were in direct contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler and had received consignments of arms and ammunition for further distribution across the state."Initial investigations indicate that the accused were acting as conduits in a larger cross-border network engaged in smuggling narcotics and illegal weapons into Punjab," the DGP said.According to police, the counter intelligence officials had received specific intelligence inputs that the two accused had recently received a consignment of arms and ammunition and were on their way to deliver it near Kale Ghanupur village on the Amritsar bypass highway.A case has been registered under the Arms Act, while additional provisions under the NDPS Act are likely to be added during the course of investigation.
