Chandigarh: Congress MLAs on Tuesday urged Haryana governor Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh to direct the state govt to withdraw cases registered against MLA Mamman Khan Engineer in connection with the 2023 Nuh violence.
Mamman Khan is facing prosecution in three cases registered following complaints in Nuh. He has been accused of inciting violence during the Braj Mandal Yatra.
A delegation of Congress MLAs, led by leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda and deputy leader Aftab Ahmed, met the governor and submitted a memorandum. Aftab Ahmed alleged the cases were politically motivated, claiming Khan was not present in the area at the time. He said the governor gave a patient hearing and assured them the matter would be forwarded to the govt.
On July 31, 2023, communal violence broke out in Nuh during the annual Braj Mandal Yatra organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad. Incidents were later reported from Gurugram and Sohna.
By August 3, at least seven people had died and over 200 were injured. Police had also arrested Bittu Bajrangi, and later invoked provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against Mamman Khan.
Last year, the state secretariat had granted sanction to prosecute the MLA.
