Commerce hub elects arts guy
Chandigarh: Call it a quirk of luck or calculative voting, commerce and arts students were elected campus presidents in five colleges each. Commerce hub GGDSD College elected a campus president from humanities.
Commerce students triumphed in SGGSC and SGGSCW, Sector 26, Commerce College-50, GC-46, and Dev Samaj-45, while arts candidates won the top post in GC-11, MCM-36, GCG-42, SD-32, and DAV-10. Manjit Singh, principal of the Sector-50 Government College for Commerce and Business Administration, said the political appeal of commerce students was a good sign. She said: “It might be that the voters are aware that the commerce students take calculative decisions and move practically.”
Of the 1,121 votes polled at Post Graduate Government College, sector 46, NOTA (none of the above) accounted for 112. The maximum rejection votes were for the two candidates for secretary. Harinder Kaur, in charge of the election committee, said she was surprised by the large number of NOTA votes and why students couldn’t find a suitable candidate.
Ajay Sharma, dean of student welfare at Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharam College, Sector 32, said: “The student parties picked candidates from commerce to avoid the issues they face with the arts students, mainly their inability to meet the attendance and examination clearance criteria, over which the election committee has to oust them from the race.”
