CHANDIGARH: Succumbing to the pressure mounted by protesting students, the MCM DAV College authorities on Wednesday allowed cellphones on the campus. The decision comes after a two-day long agitation over alleged roughing up of a BA first year student by some teachers for bringing a mobilephone to the college. TheSector 36 college authorities have now decided to create cellphone zones on the campus.
The decision, however, comes with a rider that phones with camera and blue tooth technology will not be allowed.
"The use of phones will be strictly prohibited inside the classrooms, near the principal's office and other academic areas," said principal Puneet Bedi. She claimed more than 60 parents had called her up on Tuesday and requested not to allow cellphones in the college. The phones have been allowed only to facilitate communication and the rider comes with the motive of discouraging exchange of objectionable multi-media messages which were allegedly found in few of the phones confiscated by the teachers earlier. The girls, who had gathered in large numbers for the third consecutive day, burst into cheers after coming to know about the decision. Incidentally, amidst the loud applause and celebrations, the slapping incident was relegated to backburner. Meanwhile, Shivani Sharma, the first year student, who had accused the physical education lecturer Jagdish Bains and another teacher of beating her up, was hugged by the latter in front of all the students. Shivani, who earlier had been demanding public apology from the teacher, seemed to be satisfied. Even as the 'cellphone crisis' got resolved, the rift between the two student groups widened with pro-teachers' camp demanding an apology from Shivani Sharma for the entire incident. A heated exchange of words took place between the two sides. Later, Principal Puneet Bedi said she would also look into the demand of students to deploy women guards on the campus.
