ATM card swap thief held

CHANDIGARH: The police on Saturday arrested a Hallomajra man for stealing money from

ATM

booths after swapping debit cards of gullible people on the pretext of helping them withdraw money.

Police said two accomplices of main accused Mithu Kumar, have been identified and teams sent to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to arrest them.

Harinder Singh Sekhon, in-charge, cyber cell, said Kumar used to exchange the ATM cards with non-functional and stolen ones.

The police recovered four debit cards from Kumar. Police arrested the accused on the complaint of Bhup Singh, a resident of Sector 28. Bhup Singh had alleged that the accused had offered to help his son withdraw money from an ATM booth in Sector 28. Later, Singh came to know that Rs 4.02 lakh had been withdrawn from his account. Police managed to catch the accused by scrutinizing the CCTV footage of the booth.

A local court has sent him in five-day police remand.
