ASI held for taking bribe

Bathinda: The vigilance bureau (VB) on Tuesday arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted at Jaito police station in Faridkot district for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 33,500.A bureau spokesperson said the action was taken against Harpal Singh on a complaint lodged by a Jaito resident. The complainant accused Harpal Singh of demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to help her husband and mother-in-law avoid police remand in a case registered under NDPS Act. The complainant said the bribe was negotiated down to Rs 80,000, and Singh took Rs 40,000. When the ASI pressured for the remaining balance, the complainant approached the VB. A VB team laid a trap and caught the police officer red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 33,500, the spokesperson said. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered.
