BHATINDA: An Army soldier died of gunshot injuries at the Bathinda Military Station in Punjab on Wednesday, around 12 hours after four personnel from an artillery unit were killed in a firing incident.

The incident took place at approximately 4.30pm on Wednesday. He was taken to military hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The soldier, identified as Laghuraj, was on sentry duty with his service weapon. The weapon and cartridge case from the same weapon was found next to the soldier. The gunshot wound was near the right temporal region.

As per a statement issued by the army authorities, the soldier had returned from leave on April 11, 2023. The case purportedly seems to be of attempted suicide. However, there is no connection whatsoever with the incident of the killing of four soldiers in the wee hours of Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, the four soldiers sleeping in a barrack near the Officers’ Mess were killed when two unidentified masked men fired at them. They had left towards jungle in the military station leaving behind the Insas rifle, which has been recovered by the Army along with 19 empty shells from the crime spot.

Gunners Yogesh Kumar, Sagar Banne, Kamlesh R and Santosh M Nagaral — all between 24 and 25 years — died in the attack.
