CHANDIGARH: The department of anaesthesia and intensive care of the PGI organised the first meeting of the academy of the PGI anaesthesia alumni meet-cum-continuing

medical education

(CME) on Saturday.

The meeting was inaugurated by Prof I C Pathak, former director, PGI, Prof Jagat Ram, director, PGI, Chandigarh, Prof Rajesh Kumar, dean, academic, PGI, and Dr Sujit Pandit, first alumnus of the department of anaesthesia, PGI, Chandigarh.

Prof I C Pathak was the guest of honour and inaugurated the meet. He highlighted the important role played by anaesthetists in conducting surgeries successfully. He said the department was one of the best in the country.

The inauguration was followed by Dr Channan Singh oration. Prof Rajesh Kumar introduced the speaker, Dr Sujit Pandit, who was the first person to obtain a postgraduate degree in

anesthesia

from the institute since its inception in 1963.

Dr Sujit Pandit spoke about his experience at the PGI from 1964, first as a lecturer and a resident in anaesthesia and later as an associate professor at the same department. He recalled how the PGI was envisioned and built by eminent doctors in the 1960 and how the department progressed over the years, when there were only three anesthetists at the institute.

The inauguration was also attended by heads of various departments. It was a trip down the memory lane for the alumni of the PGI.
