AI-powered app aids Mohali police in night checks

Barinderjit.SalujaMohali: The Punjab Artificial Intelligence System (PAIS) app proved useful for Mohali police on Saturday night when they stopped a biker for routine checking at a checkpost on Airport Road.DSP Harsimran Singh Bal said that when asked about his identity, the man provided incorrect details. Police personnel took his photograph and uploaded it on the app, which revealed that two snatching cases were registered against him and that he was out on bail. Apprehending further mischief, the police took him into preventive custody.Talking to TOI, police officials said the app, an AI-powered facial recognition tool, has been of great help in identifying individuals with criminal records. Over the past few weeks, police have increased the use of the app at checkposts across the district, particularly during night operations. They said the app has yielded good results in tracking habitual offenders.Last week, police claimed to have identified 27 individuals across the district in a single night who were either facing trial or had two or more FIRs registered against them. Over the past week, PAIS has also helped in the arrest of seven proclaimed offenders (POs).Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans said law enforcement agencies across the country are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence as a crime detection and prevention tool, despite concerns over algorithmic bias and privacy implications. "Mohali police have utilised this technology and achieved considerable success," he said.In a recent operation, Mohali police detained a suspect at a checkpost following a tip-off. Officers took the man's photograph and uploaded it on the PAIS platform, which generated details of his criminal history, including involvement in contract killing and loot cases.In another case, a car driver who refused to cooperate during routine checking was subjected to facial recognition through the app. The system identified him as a wanted criminal in another district, following which he was detained and handed over to the concerned police authorities.DSP Bal said all police personnel deployed at checkposts are equipped with the PAIS application, enabling them to access real-time information about suspects. To strengthen surveillance, Mohali police have established multiple checkposts at district entry and exit points to monitor the movement of suspected criminals.
