MOHALI: Focusing on its top priority to eliminate drug menace,

police arrested 391 drug peddlers in 2019. Data provided by the department reveals that there was 64% rise in the number of cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 as compared to a year-ago period.


“A total of 269 cases were registered under the NDPS Act in 2019 as compared to 164 cases in 2018. When it comes to arresting miscreants, the department showed no leniency. As many as 391 accused were arrested in 2019 against 238 in 2018,” official data revealed.


According to the data, recovery of banned pills and capsules saw a rise of 120% from 52,706 in 2018 to 1,16,201in 2019.

“Supply channels have increased in the district. Zirakpur, Derabassi and Kharar have become hubs for smugglers. I believe that easy money coupled with addiction is the major driving force behind the rise. Drug peddlers caught by us are mostly addicts,” said superintendent of police, investigation, Harmandeep Singh Hans.
