JAMMU: Police have detained six jawans at Jammu railway station here for possessing "suspicious" gun licences, officials said today.

"We have detained six jawans with suspicious gun licences and weapons at Jammu railway station," senior superintendent of police (SSP), railways, Ragubir Singh told reporters here tonight.

While checking their licenses, it was found that the documents were given to them by gun manufacturing and sale units, and not by the district magistrates of Poonch, Doda and Kishtwar, which are the issuing authorities, he said.

The detained jawans include two from CRPF and four from the army, he said, adding that 50 cartridges, six rifles and as many ‘suspicious’ licenses have been recovered from them.

During interrogation, one of the jawans, currently posted in Amritsar, purportedly told police that he had paid Rs 35,000 to a dealer at Shiv Market here to purchase a gun, license and cartridges.

Teams of railway police will be sent to Poonch, Kishtwar and Doda to verify the authenticity of the licenses, the SSP said

A case has been registered and investigation is on, he said, adding that the case could help officials unearth fake arms licence rackets in the state.
