5 including woman held for liquor smuggling

CHANDIGARH: Cracking a whip on

illegal trade

of

liquor

smuggling in slum areas, police have arrested five persons including a woman and recovered around 200 bottles of country made liquor from their possession on Monday night. The crackdown came following after the two murders at colony number-4 and

Ramdarbar

in the last one week respectively.

The five arrested were included Tipu and Sanjay of colony number-4, Ravinder of Ramdarbar, Bhajan Lal of Sector 37 and a woman, who was arrested near the dividing road between Sector 55/56. The murders included one of the woman, who was stabbed to death over her refusal to give water to an alcoholic at colony number-4 on September 15. A cyclist Shitu Ram was stabbed to death by a group of Tipsy youth with the intention of murder at Ramdarbar on September 25.

Sources maintained the trade of illegal liquor in slum areas and rehabilitation colonies has become the cause of so many heinous crimes. On August 3, Vikas, 18, of Sector 25, was murdered in cold blood in broad daylight reportedly due to an old rivalry purportedly linked to the sale of illegal liquor in the colony in Sector 25. IG (UT) Tajender Singh Luthra has instructed all the police stations house officers (SHOs) to crack a whip on the trade of illegal liquor throughout the city.

Meanwhile, Ram Karan of Sector 22 was arrested for consuming liquor at public place in Sector 22.
