Bathinda: Punjab reported 49 farm fire cases on Sunday, taking the total number of crop residue burning incidents this season to 9,718. Ferozepur remained the worst-affected district, reporting the highest number of farm fire cases at 918 till May 24. At least 752 cases were reported in Moga, followed by 746 in Bathinda, 714 in Tarn Taran, 705 in Amritsar, 690 in Sangrur, 636 in Gurdaspur, 628 in Ludhiana, 537 in Muktsar, 415 in Fazilka, 412 in Patiala, 402 in Jalandhar, 372 in Faridkot, 349 in Mansa, 346 in Barnala, 335 in Kapurthala, 236 in Hoshiarpur, 170 in Malerkotla, 142 in SBS Nagar and 120 in Fatehgarh Sahib. Other three districts reported less than 100 cases.On Sunday, Madhya Pradesh reported 161 farm fire cases, while Uttar Pradesh and Haryana logged 50 and 10 new incidents, respectivley.The total farm fire cases in the season have so far reached 67,370, of which 38,561 cases have been reported from MP, accounting for 57% of the total cases. As per the ‘Consortium for research on agroecosystem monitoring and modeling from space' (CREAMS), MP has reported over 50% of the crop residue burning cases in the last five years. Of 2,65,909 cases reported from 2022 to May 24, 2026, as many as 1,33,247 incidents have been reported from MP, followed by 61,633 from UP, Punjab (57,695), Haryana (13,153) and Delhi (181). The maximum 4,435 burning cases have been reported from Videsha district of Madhya Pradesh.During the 2025 kharif season, Madhya Pradesh topped the chart with 17,067 crop residue burnng cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh (7,290) and Punjab (5,114). 768 FIRs registeredAs per the Punjab Pollution Control Board action-taken report dashboard, 768 FIRs have been filed uunder section 223 of the BNS till May 23 evening. Of total, 208 FIRs have been filed in Moga district, followed by 154 in Amritsar, 71 FIRs in Sangrur, 60 each in Mansa, Patiala, 51 in Fazilka, 50 in Kapurthala, 45 in Barnala, 30 in Gurdaspur, 15 in Bathinda, 13 in Faridkot, four in Jalandhar, three in Muktsar, two in Pathankot and two in Ludhiana. At least 929 red entries have been made in land records. Of Rs 1.1 crore environmental compensation imposed in 2,286 cases, Rs 9,05,000 has been realized.
