BATHINDA: Like Moga’s municipal councillors who now prepare to overthrow a mayor in three days, 13 from Punjab speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan’s Kotkapura assembly constituency, including Congressmen and independents, have also switched to the Aam Aadmi Party.
Paraded at the house of Sandhwan’s brother, Birinder Singh, in the presence of AAP’s Faridkot district unit president Sukhjit Singh Dhilwan, the 13 defectors claimed to have been impressed by “the working style of chief minister Bhagwant Mann and speaker Sandhwan”.
Sukhjit Singh and Birinder Singh said after leading this exodus that it was in the interest of overall development of the town, but AAP won’t move a no-confidence motion against the sitting president. Kotkapura has 29 councillors and, earlier, AAP had no member.
On June 6, 29 councillors from different parties had joined AAP at Moga, where support from 10 other took its strength to 42 in the house of 50. Those 42 then filed a no-confidence motion against mayor Nikita Bhalla of the Congress, which will be taken up on July 4. The Congress has vowed to defeat it.
