2 school buses collided head-on; 3 kids among 5 injured
Mohali: Dense fog led to a collision between two school buses on Kurali Road in Kharar on Thursday morning, leaving five people, including three schoolchildren and the drivers of both buses, injured. The accident occurred during the early hours when visibility was extremely poor, making it difficult for drivers to assess oncoming traffic.
According to police, the buses were ferrying students of two different schools when they collided. Prima facie, one of the buses was travelling on the wrong side of the highway. The impact caused injuries to both drivers as well as three children travelling in the buses. All the injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Police said that the statements of the drivers are yet to be recorded as they are declared not fit to give statements.
Hospital sources said one of the bus drivers sustained a fracture in his leg, while the other suffered a head injury and required stitches. Among the injured children, two were discharged after first aid, while one student was discharged later after medical observation as a precautionary measure. Doctors have stated that the condition of all the injured is stable.
Eyewitnesses and local residents said dense fog had enveloped the area at the time of the accident, severely reducing visibility on the road. The fog is believed to have been a major factor in the collision, as drivers were unable to clearly see the vehicles ahead.
Soon after the accident, staff members from both schools reached the spot and coordinated with the police and medical teams to assist the injured students and ensure their safe return home. Parents of the affected children were also informed by the school authorities.
Police reached the scene, cleared the traffic, and initiated an inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.
Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal said, "Special instructions have been given to police, NHAI, and PWD to put reflective tapes and stickers at vulnerable points, which see dense fog."
