CHANDIGARH: In another case showing police's slowness, Chandigarh police took two months to lodge an FIR and arresting two suspects in connection with the kidnapping of Mumbai woman Pushpa Singh, 25, from the city. The cops took action on Tuesday.
Accused Shyam Sood and Mohammed Farooq Khan were produced in district courts in Sector 17 and sent in police custody for six days.
Sources in police said the accused were earlier working with a Sector-35 based private bank and both had summoned the woman there on the pretext of her interview on January 2.
It was alleged that they had also arranged for a room in Jimmy International Hotel in Sector 22 and one of the suspects, Mohammed Farooq Khan, reportedly accepted that he had an altercation with Pushpa Singh following which he destroyed her cell phone.
The incident came to light when Pushpa contacted her husband Parbhakar Singh and said she was in trouble and pleaded for arranging a return ticket for Mumbai.
Talking to mediapersons, Parbhakar said, ''I immediately booked an air ticket for Pushpa on January 2 but she missed her flight. Since then, her cell phone was also switched off and her bank accounts and ATMs were also not used by anyone.''
He said a complaint was immediately lodged with Mumbai and Chandigarh police, but cops here refused to entertain that claiming Pushpa came to the city from Mumbai and so the matter should be investigated there.
Sources in police said cops of sector-17 police station acted only when Pushpa's family approached SSP (UT) Naunihal Singh and he instructed the area cops to take the matter seriously.
Investigation of crime branch of Mumbai police, which was earlier probing the matter, had established that suspect Farooq and the victim were in contact for a long time and investigators concluded that the offence occurred in Chandigarh. A detailed report was sent to Chandigarh police by Mumbai cops recently.
Sub-inspector (SI) Rajeev Kumar said accused had some connections with victim Pushpa and raids were being conducted in search of the victim. A case was registered at Sector-17 police station.
