Transit dumping yard at Sati Chaura can be shifted after allotment of land: CMC tells HC

Cuttack: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) informed the Orissa high court that the transit dumping yard at Sati Chaura will be shifted only after an additional 20 acres of land sought by the civic body is allotted.

On Jan 15, the high court ordered an immediate halt to dumping of municipal waste at Sati Chaura, directing authorities to take steps for relocation of the transit yard that had triggered pollution concerns in the densely populated locality.


The yard has been functioning as a transit point where garbage and waste collected from different parts of Cuttack is temporarily stacked before being transported to the dumping site at Chakradharpur, on the outskirts of the city.

A two-judge bench hearing matters related to civic issues in the city issued the direction on the High Court Bar Association advocates’ committee’s plea seeking shifting of the dumping yard, alleging that continuous dumping in the busy area was causing severe inconvenience and health risks.

During the latest hearing on the matter on Feb 12, CMC commissioner Kirandeep Kaur Sahota submitted that the nine acres already allotted by the district administration would be utilised for setting up compressed bio gas and green charcoal plants. “Once the additional 20 acres of land as applied for is provided, the dumping yard at Sati Chaura shall be shifted,” the commissioner submitted through virtual mode.

Additional district magistrate-cum-nodal officer (Cuttack) Kamaljit Dash informed the court that while a nine-acre land parcel at Khaira Mouza under Tangi Choudwar tehsil has already been handed over to CMC, the corporation’s application for additional land is under process and assured the court that the land would be identified and advance possession will be given within seven days.

Taking note of it the two-judge bench comprising Justices K R Mohapatra and V Narasingh directed the ADM-cum-nodal officer and the CMC commissioner to file compliance affidavits by March 6, 2026, and posted the matter for further hearing on March 12, 2026.
