CUTTACK: Ravenshaw University has kicked off celebrations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
To popularise the bard's compositions among the youth, the campus radio service, Radio 90.4 MHZ, started airing Rabindra Sangeet non-stop for 12 hours from Saturday. The programme will continue for three days till Monday. Varsity officials said the programme turned out to be a hit among youger denizens from the first day itself.
The varisty will also launch year-long celebrations comprising music concerts, seminars and literary symposia.
To pay tribute to the legend, classic films based on short stories written by Tagore would also be screened throughout the year on the Rabenshaw campus.
"This is a humble effort to pay tribute to the Nobel laureate on his 150th birth anniversary and commemorate his deep connection with Orissa," vice chancellor Devdas Chhotray said. "Apart from playing his timeless songs on the radio, we have other grandiose plans to celebrate Tagore's birthday all through the year," he added.
The varsity is also planning to establish a performing art centre in Tagore's name. The centre will be established in collaboration with the Rabindra Bharati University of Kolkata, the VC said.
