BHUBANESWAR/CUTTACK: Despite rain thousands of residents of the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on Thursday bade farewell to goddess Durga.

The devotees danced to the rhythm of dhak, dhol, jodi sankha and other such traditional instruments while taking part in immersion processions.

To ensure an environmentally-friendly immersion process, idols were immersed in civic body-created four artificial ponds on the riverbeds of Kuakhai and Daya in Bhubaneswar and three such ponds on the Kathajodi riverbed in Cuttack on Thursday. The devotees were seen waiting under their umbrellas to catch a glimpse of the goddess as the idols were covered with transparent polythene sheets.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) also made adequate arrangements for proper road connectivity and lighting to ensure a smooth immersion process. “Almost all idols from across the capital gathered at places like Saheednagar, Old Town, Nayapalli and Chandrasekharpur before heading towards the designated immersion spots on the outskirts of the city,” said Naba Kishore Behera, advisor of the Nayapalli Durga Puja Committee.

Altogether 17 platoons of police forces were deployed to maintain law and order during immersion.

In Cuttack, thousands of devotees gathered near Devigada Ghat where the idols of altogether 167 pujas were immersed.

“While a team of 25 personnel of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) was deployed at the ghat, three excavators cleared the debris. Adequate illumination was also provided near the riverbank,” said D R Tripathy, Executive Engineer, CMC.
