BHUBANESWAR: Police on Thursday arrested a pimp for allegedly trying to buy the wife of a person in Uttar Pradesh last week. The accused, Ghanashyam Das alias Mama, was caught in Jhansi.
Police had arrested the woman's husband, Ranjan Jena, and his relatives, Dilip Lenka and Manjubala, in connection with the case on April 29.
The woman from Boudh district had moved the State Commission for Women (SCW) on April 27 and lodged a complaint against Jena following her providential escape from Ghanashyam's clutches in Jhansi.
The SCW had asked the Mahila police to inquire into the matter.
"We arrested the main accused, Ghanasyam, after eliciting information from the arrested trio," DCP (Bhubaneswar) Himanshu Lal said.
Jena, a resident of Baghamari near Khurda, had married the woman in July 2009. He had reportedly taken Rs 40,000 dowry during the marriage and demanded more money subsequently, a police officer said. "When the woman expressed her inability to fulfill his demand, Jena hatched the plot to sell her in Jhansi," the police officer added.
