Bhubaneswar: The Palasuni Durga Puja Committee is set to captivate devotees with a grand replica of the Golden Palace of Myanmar this time.Known for its unique and elaborate themes each year, the committee embarked on an ambitious project in its 41st year to construct a massive 70-ft tall and 50-ft wide structure that promises to be a visual spectacle. The construction of the magnificent pandal is being undertaken by over 40 skilled artisans from West Bengal, who are working tirelessly to bring the vision to life. A distinctive feature of this year’s design is the use of ‘sankha kaudi, a local decorative item, to embellish the interiors, adding a touch of regional authenticity to the grandeur. In addition to the pandal, a striking 20-ft tall idol of Maa Durga is being crafted by Soma Behera, a sculptor from Cuttack and daughter of renowned artisan, Danei Behera. The idol will be adorned with a silver crown, along with her children, collectively weighing around 15 kg, enhancing the divine aura.Security is a top priority for the organisers, with the commissionerate police deploying a platoon of police forces to ensure safety. Additionally, over 150 volunteers, including women, will be on hand to manage the crowd and maintain order.Given the pandal’s proximity to the bustling NH-16, special measures are being implemented to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of devotees.
Installation of a foot overbridge on the highway, a long-standing demand of the locals, is set to draw a huge crowd to the pandal this year, organisers said.“We refrained from using plastic items in our decorations. Four grand gates, adorned with beautiful lights, have been erected on both sides of the highway to attract visitors. We are also providing wheelchairs for the elderly and persons with disabilities,” said Raja Lenka, a primary member of the committee.Smaran Lenka, assistant secretary of the committee, highlighted a unique tradition of the puja — the ‘Agyanmala’, which will be brought from the Narayani Temple in Balugaon on Saptami, marking the commencement of festivities. “This is a distinctive feature of our celebration,” he added. The organisers will also arrange free prasad distribution from Saptami to Vijaya Dashami. “We will serve prasad to over 5,000 people. On regular days, anna, dalma, khiri and khata will be offered,” Lenka added.
