BHUBANESWAR:

Police

on Thursday arrested Manas Das, a BJD worker and owner of

NGO

Manababad Sangathan, for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 45-year-old farmer in

Khurda

on August 1. His son, Manoranjan, has also been arrested on charges of brutally attacking a man and his son in

Begunia

area recently. The incident had come to light after a video had gone viral.

Manas’s arrest comes two days after 11 tribal outfits staged a demonstration before the Khurda SP’s office demanding stringent action against him.

They alleged Manas, who is a lawyer, was highly influential because of his proximity to some BJD leaders and had been terrorising poor tribals in Khurda.

Manas landed in the eye of the storm after his name surfaced in the alleged Begunia attack on the father-son duo. The victims had lodged a complaint against Manas and his supporters. The complainants had alleged that Manas was angry with them as they had refused to work for his NGO.

“We arrested Manas after coming to know about his link in the murder case. Besides, we are probing his involvement in two other cases. His son has been arrested for his involvement in the recent attack on a father-son duo. Manas’s role in the attack is also being examined,” inspector general of police (central range) Narasingha Bhol said.
