Bhubaneswar: In response to a recent advisory from the Central govt regarding cough syrup after deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh, the state govt has directed all hospitals to exercise caution while prescribing and dispensing cough syrups to children under five years of age.The advisory issued by the ministry of health and family welfare highlights that most cough-related illnesses in young children tend to resolve on their own without medication. It stresses the importance of judicious prescribing and dispensing of cough syrups for children, noting that these medications are not necessary for young children.Specifically, the advisory advises against prescribing cough and cold syrups to children under two years of age and recommends caution for those under five. For children over five, such medications should be used only after a thorough evaluation of the child’s health condition and under the close supervision of a healthcare professional to ensure appropriate dosing. The advisory also encourages non-pharmacological approaches as the first line of treatment, such as ensuring adequate hydration, rest, and other supportive measures. Healthcare providers in both govt and private sectors are urged to adhere to these standards of care in paediatric treatment.
The advisory calls on parents and caregivers to strictly follow the prescriptions and advice provided by healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and well-being of their children. The state govt has communicated these guidelines to health officials to promote better health practices and prevent similar incidents in the future.
