Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of Gita Mehta, the journalist and author and elder sister of chief minister Naveen Patnaik, were cremated in Delhi’s Lodhi Garden crematorium on Monday. Individuals from diverse backgrounds came together to bid their final farewell to her.Besides Naveen, his elder brother Prem, their other family members, people from the literary and art world and political leaders, like former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, were present at the crematorium as her son Aditya Singh Mehta lit the funeral pyre.“It is an emotional moment for all of us. Our CM shared an exceptionally strong bond with his sister,” Rajya Sabha member Manas Mangaraj, who was present, said.“I adored Gita Mehta and can’t believe she’s gone! She was the warmest and funniest firecracker of a women, full of spark and pizzaz and humour and warmth,” wrote Delhi-based Scottish historian William Dalrymple on a social media post. Gita, who was 80 and the second among three siblings, had earned her own identity as a war correspondent and a celebrated author. Her husband, Sonny Mehta, who was a publisher, died in December 2019.
