Rourkela: Bonai police in Sundargarh district on Friday detained a 40-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh on the charges of killing his wife during a quarrel. Their four minor children have been handed over to Childline for care and rehabilitation.Detained Ajay Singh, along with his wife Soma (33) and four children, used to travel from one place to another in a van, selling Ayurvedic medicinal items.Police said the family had been camping at Babnuagaon in Bonai area for the past few days. On Thursday night, a quarrel allegedly broke out between the couple, when Ajay slapped Soma, causing her to fall and hit her head on a stone.Ajay immediately took his seriously injured wife to Bonai subdivisional hospital, from where she was referred to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH). Doctors at the RGH declared her brought dead early on Friday morning.After getting information from the RGH, Bonai police reached the hospital and initiated legal action. The accused was subsequently brought to Bonai police station for interrogation, and the body of the deceased was kept in mortuary.Police have informed Soma’s parents, who are natives of Bargarh district. After the arrival of her family members, police will proceed with the postmortem examination on Saturday, before handing over the body to them.
“We have detained the accused on the charge of killing his wife and are interrogating him,” said Pinky Kumari Murmu, inspector in charge of Bonai police station. “The four minor children have been placed under the care of the Childline,” she said.
