KENDRAPADA: The district administration has begun an eviction drive on Thursday on both sides of the main road at Kendrapada’s New Bus Stand and its nearby market.

“We launched the operation against illegal shop owners who had taken over both sides of the road. The encroachers protested but we demolished many shops,” said Niranjan Behera, sub-collector , Kendrapada. “Security was tightened and police was deployed to check any untoward situation during eviction,” he said. Behera said the administration “will not spare encroachers who are illegally occupying government land”. “Congestion on the roads has become a major concern. Roadside encroachments have been identified as one of the main contributory factors. Legal action will be taken against those who refuse to vacate the land,” he said.

Commuters said encroachments had narrowed the road down, bringing traffic to a crawl.
