Bhubaneswar: Parents of Mamita Meher termed Gobinda Sahu’s death as divine justice, a day after the key accused in their daughter’s murder allegedly killed himself in jail custody. Sahu, who was arrested October 19, 2021, was lodged at Kantabanji sub-jail in Balangir district. He was found hanging from the railing of the jail’s kitchen on Tuesday. Though police said he died by suicide, mystery surrounds the circumstances that led to his death.
“We had been praying for Gobinda’s death penalty. He did not show any mercy and killed my daughter brutally. We are happy that he died inside the jail. God has given us justice and fulfilled our wish,” Mamita’s mother Tulasi Meher, a housewife, said.
Mamita’s father Suchandra, a farmer, also expressed happiness over Gobinda’s unnatural death. “I would have been happier had he died following a death sentence handed by the court. Still, I am glad that he has died. Who knows, he would have used his influence to get a verdict in his favour,” Suchandra said.
The BJP and Congress continued to target the BJD for Gobinda’s death, claiming that he posed a threat to former minister Dibya Shankar Mishra, who was said to be close to the deceased.
The BJD, on its part, accused the BJP of resorting to cheap politics. “Considering the sensitivity of Mamita’s murder case, the government had requested the Orissa HC to depute a district judge to monitor the police investigation. The high court had entrusted the task of supervising the probe to a retired district judge. Mamita’s parents had already urged the opposition not to politicise the issue,” BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said on Wednesday.
