Keonjhar: Forest personnel on Monday raided Poipani forest near Kumulabahali village in Patna range and seized the carcass of a wild boar. One person, Birbal Mahanat (47) of Poipani village in Bhandaripasi, was arrested while allegedly sharing the meat after poaching. Forest officials recovered 1.116 kg meat from the spot.
According to forest department sources, Birbal and two others had hunted a wild boar using a hand bomb in Poipani reserve forest. After the boar died, the trio duvided the meat amongst themselves.
Official sources said poachers coat the hand bombs with goat meat and leave them in areas frequented by wild boars. When the animal consumes the bait, the bomb explodes, causing fatal head injuries. The hunters then collect the carcass and consume the meat. Patna range officer Bana Bihari Sardar said, “Efforts are on to nab the others involved in the crime.”
