Dhenkanal farmers export strawberries to London: A new milestone for horticulture
Bhubaneswar: Farmers from Dhenkanal district have exported a 51-kg consignment of fresh strawberries to London for the first time, marking a new milestone for the state’s horticulture sector. The shipment was sent to the UK during the district-level flower show held in Dhenkanal on Monday and Tuesday.
Officials said the overseas shipment helped growers earn nearly 50% higher prices than they typically receive in local markets, while also opening up a new sales channel beyond mandis.
The strawberries were grown and pooled by a farmer producer organisation (FPO) based in Dhenkanal. The development highlights how organised farmer collectives can produce and aggregate export-grade horticultural crops, according to a statement issued by the agriculture and farmers’ empowerment department on Wednesday.
The export was facilitated by the Directorate of Horticulture under the department through the Promotion and Stabilisation of Farmer Producer Organisation (PSFPO) project. Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM) also provided support, helping farmers connect with structured, premium markets and meet required processes for international trade, officials said.
Calling the export significant, the department said it was the first time fresh strawberries from Odisha were sent to an overseas destination. The move reflects the state’s push towards high-value crops and growing farmer confidence in meeting strict international quality and compliance norms.
The consignment was flagged off by Dhenkanal collector Ashish Ishwar Patil, who said such initiatives can expand income opportunities for farmers, strengthen rural enterprises, and improve Odisha’s standing as a supplier of fresh produce in global markets.
Strawberries, known for their freshness, nutritional value and antioxidants, are in demand across premium fruit retail, food processing, and hospitality segments worldwide. Officials said the successful export aligns with efforts to promote crops that offer better returns to farmers while catering to global demand for safe, nutritious and responsibly sourced produce.
