Bhopal: A woman was strangled to death and her body was hanged from a tree in a forest to pass it off as suicide in Anuppur district.
The decomposed body of the 25-year-old woman was found hanging near Mathdeura temple under Chachai police station limits on March 25 after a local resident alerted authorities. Police conducted a panchnama in the presence of the woman's family members and sent the body for post-mortem.
The autopsy report confirmed that the woman died due to strangulation, ruling out death by hanging. During investigation, statements of family members revealed that the woman was in a relationship with a man after her husband's death.
Police identified the accused as Satendra Gupta alias Sangam, 27, a resident of Rampur. He allegedly used to frequently meet the woman and take her along in his vehicle.
According to police, on March 9, the accused called the woman to meet him on Bakho road and took her on a motorcycle to a secluded forest area. When the woman reportedly insisted that he accept her as his wife, an argument broke out between them. In a fit of rage, the accused allegedly strangled her with her dupatta and later hanged the body from a tree to make it appear as suicide before fleeing.
A case was registered on March 29 under relevant sections of the BNS. The accused was arrested and produced before a court in Anuppur which sent him to judicial custody.
