BHOPAL: A dumper carrying illegally quarried sand crushed a head constable in Morena district in early hours of Sunday. The driver fled the spot abandoning the vehicle. The driver has been booked under Section 304, culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Morena superintendent of police Navneet Bhasin said, "The sand carried by the truck was quarried illegally."
The incident, second in three years, brought back memories of brutal killing of Narendra Kumar, IPS officer, posted as sub-divisional police officer at Bamor in Morena district.
The young officer died on March 8, 2012, when he attempted to stop a tractor loaded with illegally-quarried stones.
The fresh incident brought in focus disproportionate influence sand mafia wields and scale of illegal quarrying of stone and sand in district despite police action against mafia.
On Sunday morning, constable Dharmendra Singh Chouhan, posted at Noorabad police station, was part of a police team to nab a loot accused. He spotted a sand-laden dumper with registration number MP 06 GA 0974 parked on middle of road at Dhanela village. When the constable asked the driver to move and give way, he tried to escape and run the heavy vehicle in reverse gear. As a result, the constable, who was coming from behind, was crushed.
Dharmendra, the ex armyman, was recruited in MP Police a year ago. His wife and two children family live in Gwalior.
