Platinum Plaza Sq tops list of accident-prone zones in Bhopal
Bhopal: Based on a three-year analysis from 2023 to 2025, Bhopal Traffic Police have identified 11 black spots making city roads dangerous, and most of the stretches were flagged in past reports as well. The stretch at Platinum Plaza Square (Atal Path Square) in TT Nagar, along with 1250 Square in Habibganj, emerged as the most accident-prone zones, recording 18 and 10 accidents respectively during this period.
Traffic cops maintained that last year 16 black spots were identified in the city out of which four have already been rectified by the construction agencies. Rectification work at many of the black spots identified this year has already been sanctioned and is under progress.
Traffic cops noted that most spots marked as black spots this year were flagged in previous years. Despite repeated recommendations for corrective action—such as road engineering improvements, clear road markings, speed-reducing measures, and traffic signage installation—most suggestions are yet to be implemented. They urged construction agencies to immediately address the underlying road engineering defects to eliminate these danger zones and ensure road safety.
Platinum Plaza Square topped the list with 18 accidents and six fatalities over three years. While speed reduction measures were already implemented here, the lack of CCTV cameras continues to make it a hotspot, as drivers regularly jump red lights. Speed reduction measures installed at the junction considerably controlled road accidents. Police emphasized that stricter enforcement is needed, including installing speed monitoring and automatic number plate recognition cameras. The synchronisation of traffic signals according to traffic volume also needs to be done.
The 1250 Square junction in Habibganj/TT Nagar was the second most accident-prone location, with 10 accidents and four fatalities over three years. After rectification work at this site, no deaths were reported in 2025. The traffic police have proposed widening a left turn and constructing a divider from 1250 Hospital towards Arjun Nagar to ease congestion. The pedestrian way made up of red stone blocks needs to be removed.
The 300-meter stretch at Ratnagiri Trisection on Raisen Road in Piplani has been identified as the third most accident-prone spot, with 9 road accidents and one fatality recorded over the past three years. Traffic police noted that ongoing construction work for the 8-lane road and metro project in the area is going on in the area. Police assured that once the construction is complete, the traffic issues at this trisection will be resolved. This stretch joins Platinum Plaza and 1250 Square as the top three accident black spots in Bhopal.
The stretch between Court Square and Paryavas Trisection, falling under the jurisdiction of MP Nagar and Arera Hills police stations, has continued to figure among the city’s accident-prone zones. Traffic police data showed that 8 road accidents were reported on this stretch over the past three years, resulting in two fatalities. To improve safety, traffic police have recommended reducing the width of the central divider and trimming trees along the stretch to improve visibility for commuters.
Gyarah Meel Trisection and Bag Sewania Police Station Square on Hoshangabad Road have once again been identified as black spots after 8 road accidents each were reported at both locations during the last three years. While four people lost their lives in accidents at Gyarah Meel, one fatality was reported at Bag Sewania Square.
Traffic police have suggested converting the stretch from Gyarah Meel Trisection to Nandi Square into a one-way route to reduce congestion and chances of collisions. Installation of proper one-way signage from Nandi Square towards Gyarah Meel has also been proposed.
At Bag Sewania Square, police recommended clearing encroachments and obstacles from both left turns and proper channelisation of left and right-turn movements. Removal of an electric pole located near the junction has also been suggested to improve traffic flow and road safety.
ISBT-Govindpura Turning: A Long-Standing Black Spot:
The ISBT-Govindpura turning, which connects the BHEL area to the city, has remained a black spot for years, with five accidents and one fatality in the last three years. During peak hours, it remains one of the most congested stretches. The police suggested expanding the road from Chetak Bridge to Anna Nagar. This expansion requires removing obstacles, such as shifting the bus stop backward and trimming or relocating trees on BHEL land.
Road Accident Toll: 2025 vs 2026:
In 2025, Bhopal reported 2,867 road accidents, resulting in 214 fatalities, averaging about 8 accidents daily. In the first four months of this year (January to April), 83 people died in 998 accidents, while 801 others were injured. Though casualties slightly declined this year, ongoing construction work on many roads raises concerns if repairs are not completed before the monsoon.
Additional DCP (Traffic) Basant Kaul said the rectification process is underway. Budgets have been sanctioned for road safety measures, and tenders have been issued for many sites. He urged residents to strictly follow traffic rules. “Avoid drunk driving, over-speeding, wear helmets and seatbelts, and follow traffic norms,” he said.
