Bhopal: Finding one's way through the vast campus of AIIMS Bhopal is set to become significantly easier, with the institute rolling out a smart, AI-enabled navigation system for patients and visitors at the hospital.
The initiative is being developed in collaboration with IIT Indore, with the aim of simplifying movement across the hospital and academic complex.

Officials said the web- and mobile app-based system is designed to address long-standing complaints about the difficulty of navigating the sprawling campus, where multiple buildings have similar layouts. Under the project, QR codes will be installed at key entry points and prominent locations. Scanning the code will open an interactive map on the user's phone, providing step-by-step directions from the current location to the desired department, ward or office. The system will use GPS for navigation between buildings, while indoor navigation—where GPS accuracy is limited—will rely on relay devices installed roughly every 15 metres to ensure precise guidance.
A dedicated mobile application will also be available for users seeking continuous assistance. The project will initially be implemented as a 1-month pilot to assess its usability and effectiveness. If successful, it will be expanded across the entire campus. Officials said the initiative is expected to save time for patients, reduce dependence on staff for directions, and ease anxiety among visitors unfamiliar with the large hospital.
The collaboration is being seen as a step towards patient-centric digital innovation, reinforcing AIIMS Bhopal's push to adopt smart healthcare infrastructure and improve the overall patient experience.
